What a beautiful day it turned out to be for The Second Annual Jazz Brunch to benefit Independence House! This year’s event was held at the superb Amari Ristorante on Route 6A in East Sandwich. WQRC’s Promotion Director, Michelle Lorraine, along with her terrific team from WQRC 99.9 fm, put forth huge efforts in organizing a fantastic silent auction, hosting a terrific Live Auction and procuring the great jazz sounds of Cape Cod’s own, guitarist Pat Ryan and his trio to provide the entertainment. Amari owner Craig Austin and Volunteer, Tracy Goldberg worked tirelessly to coordinate all the meticulous details of setting up, preparing and serving a brunch extraordinaire that had event goers raving about the food which also included, for the second year, a dazzling and decadent dessert bar, and also an omelet bar, prepared under the direction of Jim Miller of The Zammer Hospitality Institute of CCCC.
Lysetta Hurge Putnam, Executive Director of Independence House, welcomed guests and all who helped make the Jazz Brunch possible, with an appreciative and heartfelt “Thank You!” She brought attention to the vital and crucial programs available to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in our community offered at Independence House and emphasized the importance of everyone reaching out and supporting the mission of the organization. Lysetta remarked that mostly everyone knows someone who has been affected by sexual assault or domestic violence at some point in their lives. This was soon echoed by WQRC’s Host of The Sunday Jazz Brunch, Janet Birchfield who along with Kevin McGonagle and Cheryl Park hosted the live auction. The event helped raise over $16,000 for programs and services offered year round at Independence House.

| Many devoted supporters showed up for The 5 th Annual Mother's Day 5K Walk to benefit Indpendence House on Sunday, May 14 th at 9 am at The four Points Sheraton Hyannis Resort. Despite high winds and driving rain, they walked with determination to fulfill their collected pledges and help raise nearly $20,000 and much awareness for Independence House, the Cape's only comprehensive resource center for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and their children. On the bright side, all walkers received a long stem yellow rose, courtesy of KaBloom of Hyannis. Custom designed T-shirts by Cape artist, Odin Smith were given to those who fundraised a minimum of $100.
Several walking teams, local businesses, organizations, families, individuals and Mother and Child teams made the effort to spend their Mother's Day to help fight domestic violence and sexual assault. For over 26 years, Independence House has been providing counseling, court advocacy, safe homes, support groups, outreach, education and more to victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and their children. Community support has always been a mainstay of funding for Independence House and continues to be an essential component to maintain the organization.
The event would not be possible without the many sponsors and individuals who continue to support Independence House. This year's sponsors included Mid-Cape Home Centers, Cape Cod Cooperative Bank, TD Banknorth, Sovereign Bank, Cape Cod Times, & Cape Cod Aggregates.
Special thanks to KaBloom of Hyannis, Vermont Pure Springs Water, & Lambert's Rainbow Fruit.
Independence House is open M-F, 9am – 5pm and is located at 160 Bassett Lane in Hyannis. The 24 emergency hotline phone is 1-800-439-6507. |
