"To sustain our assistance, we count on volunteers."

Volunteer Program

Volunteers are vital to our continued growth and success, The men and woman who participate represent a myrid of backgrounds, educational levels and interests. They do, however, have two things in common - a sensitivity to the individuals we serve and a commitment to end domestic violence and sexual assault. Many former clients choose this way to support others and the program is often praised for fostering an atmosphere of trust and recognition where volunteers can reach their full potential.

Volunteers complete training sessions in preparation for one of many critical roles:

  • Hotline: responding to crisis calls
  • Safe home: providing temporary shelter for a woman and her children; all locations are confidential (safe homes must be pre-approved)
  • Court Advocacy: helping with court procedures, including obtaining Abuse Prevention Orders
  • Child care: supervision and activities while their parent attends support groups
  • Transportation: arranging for transportation to court, welfare or housing offices
  • Education & outreach: speaking to civic, church and professional groups about domestic violence, sexual assault, legal options and Independence House services
  • Office reception: answering phones, typing & filing, taking crisis calls, giving support to individuals and families; processing intakes and advocacy
  • Group facilitator: facilitating support groups
